Producing a seamless pipe without a welded seam begins with piercing a solid round billet at 1,200-1,280°C. The Mannesmann cross-rolling process uses two barrel rolls rotating at 90-180 RPM with a stationary piercer plug: the billet is pushed over the plug, creating a hollow shell through rotational shear forces. This principle — unchanged since Mannesmann's 1885 patent — is refined by PQF 3-roll technology for tolerances of ±0.5mm OD. Six product lines emerge from Xenith Steel's Cangzhou PQF mill: carbon seamless (ASTM A106/A53), API 5L line pipe (PSL1-PSL3, X42-X80), boiler tubes (ASME SA192/SA210/SA213), heat exchanger U-tubes (T11/T22/T91), mechanical tubing, and precision cold-drawn seamless (OD 1/4-36in, WT 2-80mm). 100% ultrasonic, eddy current, and hydrostatic inspection. CNPC and Sinopec specify Xenith's PQF output for critical energy applications across 60 countries. Oil & Gas / Industrial

Frequently Asked Questions about Seamless Steel Pipe

1. What types of seamless steel pipe does Xenith Steel manufacture?

Xenith Steel manufactures six seamless pipe types:

(1) Carbon Seamless Pipe: ASTM A106/A53 for general service.

(2) Boiler Pipe: ASTM A106/A179/A192 for high-temperature boiler tubes.

(3) Line Pipe: API 5L for oil and gas transmission.

(4) Heat Exchanger Tubes: ASTM A179/A210 for heat transfer applications.

(5) Mechanical Steel Pipe: For structural and mechanical applications.

(6) Precision Pipe: Cold drawn for tight tolerance requirements.

2. What is the difference between hot rolled and cold drawn seamless pipe?

Two processes differ in dimensions and surface quality:

(1) Hot Rolled: OD 32-356mm, WT 3-50mm, max length 50m. Economical for large diameter and thick wall. Surface has mill scale.

(2) Cold Drawn: OD 20-273mm, WT 1-26mm, max length 50m. Tighter tolerances, smoother surface finish. Higher strength from cold working. Preferred for precision applications.

3. What standards govern seamless steel pipe manufacturing?

Xenith Steel follows five seamless pipe standards:

(1) ASTM A106: Seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service.

(2) ASTM A53: Seamless and welded carbon steel pipe for general service.

(3) API 5L: Seamless line pipe for oil and gas transmission.

(4) EN 10216: Seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes.

(5) DIN 17175: Seamless tubes for elevated temperature service.

4. What grades are available for seamless steel pipe?

Xenith Steel supplies eight seamless pipe grades:

(1) ASTM A106 Gr.A/B/C: Carbon steel for high-temperature service.

(2) API 5L Gr.B/X42-X70: Line pipe for oil and gas.

(3) ASTM A335 P1/P5/P9/P11/P22/P91: Alloy steel for high-temperature service.

(4) ASTM A179: Carbon steel heat exchanger tubes.

(5) EN 10216 P235TR1/2: European pressure tubes.

(6) DIN 17175 ST45.8/ST37: German boiler tubes.

(7) 15MoG/15CrMoG/16Mn: Chinese boiler and pressure vessel grades.

(8) JIS G3454 STB340: Japanese boiler tubes.

5. What manufacturing processes does Xenith Steel use for seamless pipe?

Xenith Steel uses four seamless pipe processes:

(1) Hot Rolling: Billet heating, piercing, rolling, and sizing for large diameter pipes.

(2) Cold Rolling: Pilger mill reduction for simultaneous wall and diameter control.

(3) Cold Drawing: Drawing through dies for tight tolerances and smooth surface.

(4) Hot Expanding: Expanding smaller diameter pipes to larger sizes for cost-effective large diameter production.

6. What quality tests are performed on seamless steel pipe?

Xenith Steel performs six quality tests:

(1) Chemical analysis for grade verification via spectrographic testing.

(2) Tensile testing for yield strength, ultimate strength, and elongation.

(3) Hydrostatic pressure testing for each pipe.

(4) Non-destructive testing (UT/ET) for internal and surface defects.

(5) Flattening and flaring tests for ductility verification.

(6) Dimensional inspection for OD, WT, length, and straightness.
